Pro Tennis goes Esports: The Australian Open hosts a $500k Fortnite Tournament.

Esports continue to integrate into the traditional “sports” sphere in many ways, the newest being an event officially hosted by the Australian Open and it’s going to be the biggest Esports competition to date in the country!

Called the “Fortnite Summer Smash” the event will be open for online qualifiers to the first 500 eligible players and with that selection comes an invitation to Margaret Court Arena on January 26th for heats into the ProAm. The champions will take home a share of the landmark $500k prize.

These players will be in some high profile company as well since the AO will be hosting 100 personalities from sports, pro gaming and celebrities.

It’s a great step for Esports and Australia as well.

Australia’s best Fortnite players are set to compete in a solos tournament with a further 100 personalities from sports, entertainment and the gaming world taking part in a Pro-Am duos tournament for a record $500,000 in combined prize money and charitable donations.


The Fortnite Summer Smash solos event will consist of three phases – registration, a qualifying stage and finals stage. Points awarded for each stage are as follows:

Victory Royale: +3 Points
2nd-3rd Place: +2 Points
4th-10th Place: +1 Point
3-4 Eliminations: +1 Point
5-6 Eliminations: +2 Points
7+ Eliminations: +3 Points

The first 500 eligible players to register online will be invited to compete in one of 5 heats at Margaret Court Arena on Saturday 26th of January 2019. Each heat will consist of two matches, with the top 20 from each heat progressing to a 6 match Grand Finals event a day later.

A 3 match charity Pro-AM duos event will be held after after the solos, and features some of Australia’s best players from gaming and entertainment.

How to play

Registration will open online at 12PM AEDT Wednesday 9 January on a first come first serve basis with the first 500 eligible entries receiving an invitation to compete in one of the qualifying heats.

Upon receiving an invitation to the qualifying event, you will need to complete the following challenges:

  • Be 16 or older at the time of event
  • Be a resident of Australia or New Zealand
  • Have a valid ID and precinct entry
  • Agree to the Fortnite Summer Smash at Australian Open event rules
  • Use the on-site peripherals (mice/keyboard/controllers) provided.
