Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was the biggest winner at the British Academy Games Awards in London last night. The dark fantasy action-adventure game won five BAFTA awards, including Game Beyond Entertainment, Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, British Game, and Performer: Melina Juergens as Senua.
The Game Beyond Entertainment award is important because it highlights mental illness, or the psychosis experienced by Senua in the game. The GBE category was introduced “to raise awareness through empathy and emotional impact, to engage with real world problems, or to make the world a better place.”
In order to create realistic psychosis, the game developers interviewed mental health patients and professionals.A 25 minute feature on this subject will be included in Hellblade. The teaser can be watched here.
