Analysts say GTA V is now the most profitable entertainment product ever, bringing in more money than any book, movie, record, or video game. Since September 2013, GTA V has generated $6 billion in revenue.
“Since its launch in 2013, GTA V has sold 90 million units, putting its total haul for publisher Take-Two Interactive in the neighborhood of $6 billion,” Doug Creutz, an research analyst for Cowen, told MarketWatch.
“Far above the success of blockbuster movies like Star Wars or Gone With The Wind, which both collected more than $3 billion, adjusted for inflation. Even taking into account DVD and streaming sales would not put the biggest movie blockbusters in GTA V’s neighborhood.”
Despite being known for controversy, GTA V is currently the third most sold game in history at 85 million copies. The only two games ahead are Tetris (170 million) and Minecraft (122 million).
A sixth installment of the GTA series is not being planned due to the continued success of GTA V.
